Humankind has misdiagnosed & mistreated some
of these illnesses, but God's care knows nothing but perfection.

institutionalized with mental illness due to the lack of vitamin B1 (thiamine)
found in the outer coating of cereal grain, green peas, beans, egg yolk &

- Regarding vitamins
B-3 in the treatment of
schizophrenia, one must start
with
low dosages and very gradually increase the dosage (titrate up).
- 1 guideline of
Hoffer is that if there is nausea or vomiting,
one
has reached the limit or increased the B-3 dosage too fast.
- Be sure to take B-3 with food & a lot of water
(Liquids like soda, grapefruit juice & alcohol should always be avoided.)
- Most common & cheapest form of Vitamin B3 is called Niacin
(nicotinic acid or nicotinate)
- Niacin causes flushing & itching.
If you are allowed to take
aspirin, take it 15 minutes prior to taking the Niacin in order to reduce
or eliminate Niacin's side effects. (White willow bark is a substitute for
aspirin.)
- Capsules usually are better utilized by the body than tablets,
especially if encapsulated with vegetable rather than synthetic products.
- Non-flushing B3 vitamins (niacin) are called niacinamide, nicotinate
(nicotinic acid),
hexanicacinate or inositol hexanicainate (niacin bound to inositol).

- Non-flushing & non-time release niacin supplements have the least
debate as to liver damage.
- Depending on pricing, availability &
the patient's toleration,
one can increase the dosage by 50 mg per week or by month. However, it
is likely you will want to start slower in the beginning months.
- In the beginning the patient may not feel like taking vitamins nor see
a need to do so, particularly if the illness or other medication causes
hyper-sleepiness.
Therefore, in early stages, one may expect the
daily dosage to be lower than that suggested in below table.
For
example, the patient might take Niacin once rather than 4 times
a day.
- A simple way to work vitamin intake into the daily routine is to take
them along with any doctor prescribed medication. Remember one can
check
with doctor or pharmacist about any possible problems or interactions.
Next comes structure such as
volunteer work. (Vitamins might be taken with each of
the 3 daily meals.)
Then comes part time work. (Vitamins might be taken when meals are eaten
at home.)
Then comes full time work. (Vitamins might be taken
breakfast, supper & bedtime on week-days.)
As normal life resumes so does
confidence in oneself & confidence that the many vitamins &
medications do in fact help.
There are many wonderful vitamins
that are of great value to schizophrenia, but
B3 is significant.
B3
is to schizophrenia as flax seed is to bi-polar. Vitamins are not the

The suggested following 3-year

One may want to have a local orthomolecular doctor work with client to optimize

Doses -
"The optimum dose range is not as wide as it is for ascorbic acid, but it is
wide enough to require different recommendations for different classes of
diseases. As is always the case with nutrients, each individual must determine
their own optimum level. With nicotinic acid this is done by increasing the dose
until the flush (vaso-dilation) is gone, or is so slight it is not a problem.
One can start with as low a dose as 100 mg taken 3 times each day after meals &
gradually increase it.
I usually start with 500 mg each dose & often will start
with 1 gram per dose especially for cases of arthritis, for schizophrenics, for
alcoholics & for a few elderly patients.
However, with
elderly patients it is better to start small & work it up
slowly.
(Likewise titer off very slowly.)
No person should be given nicotinic acid without explaining to them that they
will have a flush which will vary in intensity from none to very severe.
If this
is explained carefully & if they are told that in time the flush will not be a
problem, they will not mind.
The flush may remain too intense for a few patients
& nicotinic acid may have to be replaced by a slow release preparation or by
some of the esters, for example, inositol niacinate.
The latter is a very good
preparation with very little flush.
Most find it very
acceptable even when they were not able to accept the nicotinic acid itself.
It
is rather expensive but with quantity production the price might come down.
The flush starts in the forehead with a warning tingle. Then it intensifies.
The
rate of the development of the flush depends upon so many factors it is
impossible to predict what course it will follow.
The following factors decrease the intensity of the flush:
a cold meal, taking
it after a meal, taking aspirin before, using an antihistamine in advance.
The following factors make the flush more intense:
a hot meal, a hot drink, an
empty stomach, chewing the tablets & the rate at which the tablets break down
in liquid. From the forehead & face the flush travels down the rest of the body, usually
stopping somewhere in the chest but may extend to the toes.
With continued use
the flush gradually recedes & eventually may be only a tingling sensation in the
forehead.
If the person stops taking the vitamin for a day or more the sequence
of flushing will be re-experienced.
Some people never do flush & a
few only begin to flush after several years of taking the vitamin.
With
nicotinamide there should be no flushing but I have found that about 2% will
flush.
This may be due to rapid conversion of the nicotinamide to nicotinic acid
in the body. (If not too itchy, can be good to use niacin rather than or with
nicainamide in the winter to ward off the cold, esp if working outdoors.)
When the dose is too high (&/or increased dosage too fast) for both
forms of the vitamin the patients will suffer from nausea
at 1st, & then
if the dose is NOT reduced it will lead to vomiting.
These
side effects
may be used to determine what is the optimum dose. When they do occur the dose
is reduced until it is just below the nausea level. With children the
first indication may be loss of appetite.
If this
does occur the vitamin must be stopped for a
few days & then may be resumed at a lower level.
Very few can take more than 6 grams (500 mg x 12) per day of the nicotin-amide.
With nicotinic acid it is possible to go much higher. Many schizophrenics have
taken up to 30 grams per day with no difficulty.
The dose will alter over time &
if on a dose where there were no problems, they may develop in time.
Usually
this indicates that the patient is getting better & does not need as much.
I
have divided all patients who might benefit from vitamin B-3 into the following
categories.
Category 1. These
are people who are well or nearly well, & have
no obvious disease.
They are interested in maintaining their good health or in
improving it.
They may be under increased stress. The optimum dose range varies
between 0.5 (500 mg) to 3 grams daily (niacin). The same doses apply to
nicotinamide.
Category 2. Everyone under physiological stress, such as pregnancy
& lactation, suffering from acute illness such as the common cold or flu, or
other diseases that do not threaten death.
All the psychiatric syndromes are
included in this group including the schizophrenias & the senile states.
It
also includes the very large group of people with high blood cholesterol levels
or low HDL when it is desired to restore these blood values to normal.
The dose
range is 1 gram (500 mg x 2) to 10 grams daily (niacin).
For nicotin-amide the
range is 1 1/2 g to 6 g.
Nicotin-amide does not affect cholesterol levels"
(but can be very helpful to
prevent heart attacks/ strokes).
Niacin, otherwise known as

is a very inexpensive way to boost the efficacy of a(n
occasional) detox. You want the flush kind, not
the no flush. Most doctors recommend people start with
100 mg, but up to 5,000 a day has been used for serious
drug detoxification & other urgent detox needs (such as
chemical poisoning). I weigh 220 pounds & I took 1,500
mg for 3 days. (If one does NOT have psychiatric issues)
don’t take niacin for too long, it can (possibly, if not
medically supervised) damage the liver in high doses &
it can also put your (multi) b vitamin (complex) balance
out of whack. Take it (winters, especially) in the
morning & then, in about 30-45 minutes when it kicks
in, get some exercise or do the sauna. Try some hot tea.
Drink lots of fluid (like the cranberry lemonade) &
sweat out the toxins. Niacin won’t do you much good if
you aren’t flushing out the junk while you do it. It’s
powerful. You’ll be itchy, hot, & flush red all over.
Most people without
damaged seriously livers can easily handle 500 mg for a
few days.
The (flushing) effects (of the non-niacin-amide
supplements) last about an hour.
(Regardless of unwarranted safety scare, niacin or flush
free niacin-amide is often prescribed as a heart attack
prevention medicine/prescription.)

The Old Testament
shares a story where a young adult sold his birthright for a cup of stew.
After the Death & Resurrection of Jesus the Jewish Messiah, His blood & body
