If the senior citizen is exercising & consuming an adequate/balanced/nutritional diet daily, then adding supplements may improve one's metabolism. Glutamine with niacinamide supplementation before exercise & especially at bedtime may increase the stimulation of one's own growth hormone.
One can substitute the amino acids ornithine or arginine with lysine; but this requires higher dosages.
Ames, Bruce "University of Bari in Italy
had reported that feeding acetyl-L-carnitine
to old rats improves the function of their mitochondria...Ames...could
see how the supplement might achieve its effects: Acetyl-L-carnitine,
also known as Alcar,
is a nutrient that helps transport fatty-acid fuel across lipid
membranes into mitochondria...Ames decided to add an agent to the rats'
diet to neutralize the oxidants. He tried lipoic acid, a
mitochondrial antioxidant. The results were profound. Oxidants & oxidative
damage to mitochondrial components dropped dramatically. Both the
structure and function of the mitochondria improved. The rats' activity
levels doubled...Both ingredients—Alcar and lipoic acid—are already
marketed as dietary supplements. Consumers can even duplicate the dosages
used in Juvenon's trials: 200 milligrams alpha-lipoic acid & 500 milligrams acetyl-L-carnitine, twice a day."
"Ames is convinced that simple B vitamin therapy could also combat some cases of migraines, mental retardation & many other maladies...Genetic mutations result in deformed enzymes that don't work as well as normal ones.
Enzymes rely on molecular partners called coenzymes to do their job. High amounts of B vitamins can boost
levels of coenzymes, thereby improving the binding function of defective enzymes."
"Ames & his colleagues have already devised a DNA test that can quickly assess oxidative damage to a person's genes. But those tests aren't cheap & multivitamins are."
"Ames" founded "a genomics & nutrition center."
"'If I'm going to get vitamins in the poor, I guess I'm going to have to do it myself,' he says."

PQQ is added as a recommended supplement http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrroloquinoline_quinone "Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) was discovered by J.G. Hauge as the 3rd redox cofactor after nicotinamide (tobacco nicotine) and flavin in bacteria (although they hypothesised that it was naphthoquinone). "

NAD + 3/11/2015 -
"NMN isn't available as a consumer product.
But Sinclair's report sparked excitement about NR, which was already on the market as a supplement called Niagen.
Niagen's maker, ChromaDex, a publicly traded Irvine, Calif., company, sells it to various retailers, which market it under their own brand names...
Elysium Health, jumped into the NAD game by unveiling another supplement with NR. Dubbed Basis, it's only offered online by the company." See: https://www.elysiumhealth.com/en-us/knowledge/science-101/everything-you-need-to-know-about-nicotinamide-adenine-dinucleotide-nad
1. Calorie restriction - Restricting calories (20-30% less than what you normally consume) + fasting have been shown to increase NAD+ levels and increase activation of SIRT1. This SIRT1 activation, scientists say, is why calorie restriction has been associated with increased life span in animal studies.
2. Nicotin-amide riboside is a newly discovered form of vitamin B3, which is found in trace amounts in milk. No one really thought much about it until scientists discovered that our bodies convert it into NAD+. 2 recent human trials on NR-containing supplements found that they both effectively increased levels of NAD+ in the body.
3.Wearing sunscreen or protective clothing can help minimize that damage and preserve NAD+. A healthy, whole-food-based diet & a regular exercise routine (especially HIIT-type workouts) can't hurt, either, as they both boost the health of your mitochondria and may help your body use NAD+.
4.NR-treated mice had less DNA damage, higher neuroplasticity, increased production of new neurons & lower levels of neuronal damage. In the hippocampus area of the brain (where damage & loss of volume is found in people with dementia), NR seemed to clear existing DNA damage or prevent it from spreading farther.
The NR-treated mice also performed better on memory tests.
5.Increasing our levels of NAD+ may help boost metabolism & prevent weight gain...
Positive results...were due to increased activation of the sirtuins SIRT1 and SIRT3, which led to improved oxidative metabolism. None of the mice receiving NR showed signs of diabetes.
6.Supplementation with NAD+ precursors led to DNA repair and an improvement in the health of muscle tissue within the 1st week, to the point where researchers couldn't tell the difference between the tissue of a mouse that was 2 years old and a mouse that was 4 months old. 9/26/2018

L-cysteine [2(RS)-D-ribo-(1′, 2′, 3′, 4′-Tetrahydroxybutyl)thiazolidine-4(R)-carboxylic acid (Ribose-Cysteine, RibCys)] -
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1600-0773.1992.tb00472.x/abstract - RiboCeine™ is the amino acid cysteine fused with the sugar ribose...Cysteine itself is neurotoxic when administered to mammals & is rapidly degraded.
Dr. Nagsawa spent years of research testing various compounds to find 1 which safely and effectively delivered the fragile cysteine molecule inside the cell, with the bonus effect of providing ribose for ATP production. Liver cell tests show RibCeine™ is 300% more effective in raising glutathione levels than N-Acytl-Cysteine, which is used in MaxGXL Demand Release. We’ve all heard of time release vitamins (with toxic binders)... MaxONE takes it to the next level with on-demand release. The RiboCeine is absorbed into the cells where it waits. When the body needs to make more glutathione & seperates it into the cysteine & ribose which are then used for glutathione & ATP production."

|Ribose + cysteine - Championed by Dr. Gordon Crozier in book Healing One Cell at a Time. Chapter 3 says that best current method to help cells & bypass GI system deterioration is to combine D-Ribose with L-Cysteine to help body produce its own gluththione. "If you don't have your glutathione levels corected, you won't begin to have proper methylation, a process by which a hydrogen ion is removed from the ell and replaced with a methyl gorou...to utilize certain vitamins, for detoxification & for all the biochemical pathways to operate correctly...Toxins cause genetic glithes and block up the pathways. Gluthione unblocks those pathways." Chapter 11 recommends glutathione (via precursors D-Ribose + L-Cysteine), grape seed, reverstrol, carotenoids, vitamins E & C, alpha lipoic acid, CoQ10 & xanthophylls).|
"PTCA [2(RS)-n-propylthiazolidine-4(R)-carboxylic acid], RibCys (D-Ribose-L-cysteine) &, to a lesser extent, CySSG (L-cysteine-glutathione mixed sulfide) provided protection against colitis in this murine model, which further supports a possible therapeutic application of GSH-repleting agents in IBD patients. These data strongly reinforce the previous report on the novel protective action of PTCA against colitis." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1991291/
